Ruco Chan Comments on TVB’s Slipping Viewership

TV King Ruco Chan (陳展鵬) attended a promotional event for upcoming romcom Childhood in a Capsule <童時愛上你> alongside co-stars Owen Cheung (張振朗), Bowie Wu (胡楓), and Lenna Yeung (楊卓娜). Set to premiere on June 27, the stars hope viewers will be entertained by the light-hearted comedy. While a drama’s ratings is important, Ruco does not weigh himself down with the pressure and believes in the benefits of  healthy competition in the Hong Kong television market.

“I don’t pay attention to ratings often, but I think it’s good to have healthy competition anyway. Since I was a former athlete, I got used to having a mindset where actions are louder than words. Even if you lose, you just need to be resilient and train harder on your weakness. I believe it’s the same for acting, which means I have to always keep myself in check, so that I can continue to improve,” Ruco commented.

With TVB drama ratings slipping to all time lows of 13 percent during prime time, the station scrambles to improve project quality and maintain competitiveness. TVB executive Eric Tsang (曾志偉) has already shared his plans to reform the drama production system, in which series could be released more quickly after filming is completed while public interest is high. Since appointed his position, Eric has grown the market for TVB’s variety shows such as Stars Academy <聲夢傳奇> and Infinity and Beyond <声生不息>, but viewership ratings for the station’s dramas continue to slip. While results are mixed, there is increasing pressure for the station to make more progress.
