A man is facing a first-degree murder charge after the remains of an Edmonton woman were found inside a burnt vehicle on a Strathcona County road last year, say RCMP.

On Sept. 15, 2021, Strathcona County RCMP and fire services responded to the vehicle fire near Township Road 530 and Range Road 221 in Strathcona County.

When the fire was extinguished, human remains were found inside. An autopsy completed on Sept. 17 confirmed the remains were those of 29-year-old Vanessa Silva, of Edmonton.

Cordell Kennedy, 25, of Edmonton, was arrested and charged on Friday with first-degree murder.

Kennedy was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in Edmonton court on Wednesday.
